Why are Teak products expensive?

Recently, LIdee Haus has received a few questions asking why the Teak item is much more expensive than Acacia item meanwhile both have relatively the same design and dimension. The reasons for this price discrepancy come from superior quality characteristics as well as top-notch appearance which Teak wood has rather than other outdoor wood range.

Teak wood is classified as group III in wood classification ranking in Viet Nam, the weight is not too heavy, soft yet durable and strong resistant. Teak is majorly planted among Asian countries like Myanmar, Laos, India, Thailand… and some American countries like Ecuador, Panama…, in Viet Nam Teak is mainly found in the southeast and southwest region. Being a sun-loving plant from its baby shape, Teak plant grow quite well in tropical weather with abundant rain, which partly contributes to its strong durability that Teak has in comparison to other woods.

Some superior characteristics of Teak that can be mentioned:

+ The plant itself contains natural oil with high density that can eradicate insects & mold. That’s why Teak should be a headache-free in term of insects.

+ The wood grain is naturally beautiful, smooth without dead knot, elegant tone (dark yellow or ultra-light brown), matching quite well with other architectural designs, therefore Teak wood grain is strongly favored in floor tiles setup & premium outdoor furniture.

+ Teak wood has strong elasticity with low thermal expansion. Therefore, furniture made of Teak wood can easily adapt and encounter with harsh weather condition, the component is not getting bended, cracked when environment changes. This long-lasting feature helps Teak remain with its long-life cycle, the extracted oil after being used will make the surface glossier.   

+ Teak wood is not picky type so the cleaning with soap or mild detergent is not a big deal with no effect on wood quality. However, strong detergent is not recommended as it can destroy wood texture.

+ Thanks to its sun-loving feature, the more sunlight it exposes to, the more beautiful look it gains. If the Teak is left in low-light condition for a long period, the surface can look pale somehow, but it will quickly get back to gorgeous visual after sun-bathing for 1-2 days.   

Although Teak price range is much more expensive than other typical wood types used for outdoor like Acacia, Eucalyptus…, it is still one of the most widely selected wood with 80% volume used for wood processing industry and even high-valued product manufacturing industries like gun stock, cruise, decking, wall furnishing.
